RE: Arriva North West - Winsford Depot
I can see it shortly where oaps will have to start paying a small flat fare of something like 50p when travelling the way things are going with the council cuts.

Unfortunately the decision to charge oaps will have to come from central government and I feel that that is unlikely as a large majority of older people vote in elections. It is looking likely that pensioners will continue to have free travel but fewer services to travel on in the future. Transport appears to be well down the agenda for central government apart from big soundbites such as HS2. I do not want to start a political argument as I think that it applies to all parties.

The service is struggling to make profit even after reducing the vehicle numbers probably due to the route length and number of concessionary fares. This is an industry wide problem due to the cash starved councils not being able to afford to reimburse the operators with a reasonable amount of money to cover free travel.
The results can be seen by the unfortunate demise of Routemaster on the route which was not helped of course by another operator deciding to try and get a share.
Nothing else of any significance to report on the fleet side.
The problem with the 84 is that it runs through many miles of sparsely populated countryside, generating few passengers. Similar routes elsewhere have not survived, and if Chester was not such a tourist / shopping magnet, I doubt that the Nantwich - Chester section of 84 would still exist.

As copey mentioned above the bus pass brigade are going have start paying again. Although even at a flat fare of 50p they'd still moan & call it a rip off.

But which government can afford to offend the grey vote? Unfortunately for the councils it is up to them to sort it out.
All time rail mileage travelled 327264 miles
