Things expand when they get hot. Expansion joints absorb this expansion so that the tarmac/concrete surface does not crack over time with the changing seasons.

However, over time the joints wear out and need replacing, and this is what is due to happen at Wigan soon.

It was taken at 12:13 but I also took another further up Oxford Road at 13:28.
