Small buses will be specified on a contract as the service won't normally carry the loadings to justify a bigger bus; this will the case with any authority who is tendering a bus service (of course this excludes specialist services such as park and ride).

As for the age, 10 years old is just a little over the mid-life of a bus. In Greater Manchester, the age limit is 15 years old.

I can understand the concerns about the Wirral < - > Liverpool dead running, should one of the tunnels become blocked or closed due to industrial action! But the likelihood of that happening is very rare so I wouldn't be too concerned. I am sure Impera will factor this in to their duties, and one plus side is their buses will be travelling against the main flow of traffic to pick up the start of service in the evening.

Don't forget that Imperia have also registered a Mon - Sat 30 Service between Liverpool and Saughall Massie. so there probably will be a bus or two on the Liverpool side to interwork onto the evening contracts.

Interworking wont rule out the delay mentioned from the tunnel to Old Roan. Since Rice Lane in Walton was altered and a bus lane came into force the area is a no go towards Walton Vale from 3pm onwards to half 6.

The clue is in the word bus lane, the impera bus will be allowed to use them to get to old road, from my experience going that way on a bus is not a problem.

Must have been some discussion going on at the committee meeting last Friday regarding Maytree's proposal to extend the 597 to Laneside, Lowton and Newton-le-Willows. Certainly intriguing.

Also, noticed that the 149 registration now says 148/149. Possible that the evening/Sunday service is re-numbered 148 and continue along Cheetham Hill Road into Manchester while Mon-Sat daytime 149 re-routed via Broughton to replace the 137/138, perhaps?
