RE: Arriva Buses Wales - Bangor Depot
Arriva have announced major cuts to the Holyhead - Bangor service from the 24th of September with the main Holyhead service reduced to hourly and will operate via Ysbyty Gwynedd on all journeys.

Changes to Wales from September 2023

Quote:Service 4, 4A, 4B, 4H, 4R, 4X, 544: Bangor to Llangefni and Holyhead
The number of passengers currently using the service cannot support the current level of resource, with passenger levels remaining below pre covid levels whilst at the same times costs have increased substantially.

The closure of the Menai Suspension Bridge has caused major disruption to the service with extra resource invested to maintain the current timetables due to the lengthy diversion we must undertake between Bangor and Menai.

The change is not something we have taken lightly given the impact it will have, but the service needs to be revised to improve its viability, reduce the funding required to operate it and reflect the long term works on the Menai Bridge.

The service will now offer a simpler proposition than today with fewer variations, focusing on the areas of greatest customer demand. In addition, we can now also incorporate Ysbyty Gwynedd into the service following requests from customers.

The Bangor to Llangefni and Holyhead service is being amended to operate a simplified 60-minute service. In addition, the service will be enhanced at certain times of day to operate every 30 minutes between Bangor and Llangefni on Mondays-Fridays. There is also a reduction in early morning journeys Monday to Saturday.

Route details:

4A/4 between Bangor – Llangefni – Holyhead to operate up to every 60 minutes Monday-Saturday and every 120 minutes on a Sunday.
The revised 4/4A service will operate: Bangor – Ysbty Gwynedd – Menai Bridge – Llanfairpwllgwyngyll – Gaerwen – Pentre Berw – Llangefni – Rhostrehwfa – Mona Industrial Estate – Gwalchmai (main road only) – Bryngwran – Llanfihangel-yn-Nhywyn - RAF Valley – Treardurr Bay – Morrison’s – Tesco – Holyhead Summerhill.

4L introduced Monday – Friday every 60 minutes. This will operate between Bangor and Llangefni and will co-ordinate with the 4 service to provide an off-peak 30-minute headway between Bangor and Llangefni. This service will replace the 541 service and operate on both school and non-school days.

The 4L will operate: Bangor – Ysbty Gwynedd – Parc Menai – Menai Bridge – Llanfairpwllgwyngyll – Gaerwen – Pentre Berw – Llangefni

Service 544 will be replaced by new 4/4A trips 06:56 4 from Holyhead to Llangefni, 07:56 4A from Llangefni to Bangor, 16:15 4A from Bangor serving Parc Menai to Llangefni and 17:12 4 from Llangefni to Holyhead

Service 4X journeys re-routed in Llangefni, the service will operate through Llangefni and customers can board at the stop outside Llangefni Aldi or Llangefni Post Office

Service 24 journeys 20:02, 20:55 and 21:55 will be withdrawn.

Service 541 replaced with service 4L.

Changes to Wales from September 2023

Pretty sad, but when I've used the service, it has been hideously unreliable so I'm not surprised about the low and falling patronage.
There were also just too many different service numbers.
It isn't good to be changing service numbers mid-route.
Why not use "4" as the service number for all of the new 4/4A/4L, or at least just consistently use one different service number for journeys which serve Parc Menai Ffordd-y-Llan?
4X is substantially different to the others and "X" is relatively well-known as meaning express and there aren't that many journeys anyway, so that one seems OK, though there are some different variations within 4X.

Quote:The 06:56 Llangefni to Bangor journey is retimed to operate at 06:56

Presumably this is a mistake, looking at the new timetable, though I guess it is a relatively minor retiming anyway.

I always presumed that the 4L was selected as these journeys will terminate at Llangefni.

Problem is unlike Stagecoach they don’t like the same number for split registrations

RE: Arriva Buses Wales - Bangor Depot
Had a ride through North Wales on the 1 Bws Ticket yesterday, reliability on the 5/5C/5D route is awful, despite the 5/5D combined to every 20 minutes, they were running in pairs, i wanted the 5D from Llandudno at 10.45am, but the 5D was so late i ended up catching the 5 at 11.05 instead, which ended up in front of the 5D when we reached Bangor. It was the same when i caught the 5C from Caernarfon back in spring, the 5C was 20 minutes late, & the following 5C was late too

I know the registrations for the 5/5C/5D are split in Bangor, but buses operate through [changing numbers in Bangor], but wonder if it's worth splitting the whole service in Bangor, [or certainly the Monday to Saturday daytime service] to try & improve reliability?

Yes, that's been my experience there too unfortunately.
Awful reliability and punctuality on the 4s, 5s, 62s, actually every service I've been on there except for some reason the Llangoeds. Maybe just lucky there haha.

Reliability on the Bangor-Anglesey services has not been helped by the closure of the Menai Bridge, all the routes are going over the Britannia Bridge & get delayed due to the traffic jams on the Britannia Bridge, i was on an X4 a few weeks ago & it took around 20 minutes to cross over on the Britannia Bridge because of this.
