RE: Route History
Widnes Corporation Motor Omnibus Department, as they were called in their July 1970 timetable did not use route numbers, indeed most of their buses could not display route numbers. In the list below, Runcorn refers to Bus Station (Old Town), and Widnes refers to Widnes Town Hall. With several route variants, that makes the network difficult to describe, so I apologise for any errors or omissions. Also, the timetable lists all departures from certain locations, so there may be some duplication in the list. Runcorn / Widnes - Cronton via Appleton & Black Horse. Runcorn / Widnes - Farnworth Street or Horns via Peelhouse Lane & Lunts Heath Rd. Runcorn / Widnes - Bold Heath or Black Horse via Frank St & Dykin Rd. Widnes - Horns via Fairfield. Runcorn / Widnes - Horns via Bancroft Rd Runcorn / Widnes - Rainhill or Whiston Hospital Runcorn / Widnes - Chorley Lane Coronation Drive / Deacon Road - Chorley Lane. Widnes - Hough Green (several variants) Widnes - Horns circular via Fairfield, Widnes North & Derby Rd. ditto., in reverse direction to above. Widnes - Stewards Avenue. Joint with St. Helens Corporation (only St. Helens Corporation buses could display the route numbers) 35. Widnes - St. Helens via Peelhouse Lane, Black Horse, Sutton Manor, Sutton Leach. Plus infrequent peak hour variants: 33. Widnes - St. Helens direct via Kingsway, Black Horse, Sutton Manor . 34. Widnes - St. Helens via Everite Works, Sutton Manor 37. Widnes - St. Helens via Everite Works, Sutton Manor, Sutton Leach & St. Helens Junction. Before the Widnes - Runcorn road bridge was opened, several routes terminated at "Transporter". |
