If you're gonna preserve a Marshall Dart, take the best one.
7656 wins!

Ah, so at least one of them has been saved!
MM reports that 7647, 7663, 7665 and 7669 are withdrawn at the SH Bodyshop (see 18 August posting in that thread).
Question is, nearly a month later, are they still there?

7674 is still parked-up at Bootle depot (seen there yesterday), and the bus that was to become 7666 (but became 7676) was last seen dumped at the back of Wythenshawe depot...

Does anyone know why the first and last of the batch had different registrations to the rest? The first was V624 DBN, the last was V676 DVM but the rest were V--- DVU.

There are 2 or 3 left in service, those left are at Southport.

No idea about "Dobbin" (7624), but the story I've heard re 7676 is that MTL changed their minds about paying for the registration V666 DVU, which was deemed a "select registration" on account of the triple digit, and therefore reserved by DVLA to be sold at a premium price. I'm never quite sure whether to believe it, as it would have been a few hundred quid extra, which would seem fairly insignificant when they must have been spending at least five million on the Darts themselves. But I suppose no matter what the amount, someone in a position of financial authority who got wind of it, could still veto it as an unjustified frivolity. It's interesting to note that nearly five years earlier, when MTL could still afford Volvos, they presumably decided against paying for M555 WHF WTJ; but the year before that, they did get L222 TKA, which one would assume would also have been reserved under the same criteria.

Anyway, back onto the topic of Marshalls - another couple of examples that are definitely still sitting at the back of a depot yard are 7670 and 7672, which are parked up next to the three Scania/Paladins in Runcorn. (Also glimpsed in the shed was X214 JOF.) I saw these when the X30 I was on yesterday went into the depot yard for a driver changeover, during which one passenger decided to get off the bus for a pi** up the side of the depot building! (He was promptly directed off the premises by depot staff, and denied permission to re-board 5007!)

Technically the very first batch were the T-JBAs which are now stagecoaches.
7656 wont be attending Wirral Bus and Tram as i hoped due to a slight hold up but should be done intime for a special project involving NWVRT and Arriva. Before any PMS come in i will NOT be revelling what the project is

I presume the DVLA changed the rules in 1995, so that valuable registrations could be retained by them for future fitment.
This is why (L222 TKA) was used for the 1994 Volvo B6/Plaxtons, but (M555 WTJ) -which would've been 6555- was held back.

The DVLA also retained (M560 WTJ) and (N600 CKA) which explains why 6560, 6600 (and 6555) didn't exist on the MTL/Arriva fleetlists.
It also explains why the B10B fleet ran up to 6623 (N623 CKA) of 120 buses instead of finishing at 6620.

I'd hazard a guess that the DVLA still have (V666 DVU) in their possession, so if any Marshall fans out there fancy it, why not buy it?
It'd look nice on a new car!

Could be, they certainly have changed the rules a few times. But I thought that withholding triple digits dated back further than that, to around 1990. A search on buslistsontheweb.co.uk suggests that they were skipped more often than not in H, J, K and L registered batches (for example, there was no H111 GEV). But there are a fair number of exceptions too - including Warrington's 222 (K222 VTB).

Maybe prior to 1995, local vehicle licensing offices had some discretion when issuing a continuous range to a fleet operator?
