Northern (Arriva Rail North)
RE: Northern (Arriva Rail North)
Major incident at Whaley Bridge - the town has been evacuated as a reservoir dam wall is at risk of collapsing.

The Buxton to Hazel Grove line has been closed and is expected to remain closed tomorrow and Saturday.

Rail replacement buses are running between Macclesfield and Buxton with Buxton tickets being accepted on Virgin services to Macclesfield, also between Hazel Grove and Disley.

Passengers for New Mills Newton are advised to travel to New Mills Central.

Northern are saying no other places can be served but it appears High Peak Buses are currently running a limited Manchester Airport to Buxton (normal) bus service which is diverted via New Mills and Hayfield to avoid Whaley Bridge but should still serve Chapel-en-le-Frith and Doves Holes.

769450 has been moved from Doncaster to Allerton today - was this one of the two that were at Allerton previously?

No it wasn't. Those units were 769424 and 769431

When I was at Doncaster on 26th June the 08 was shunting the driving cars of 769424, so I was rather surprised to see it shunting one of them again when I arrived there this Tuesday!

RE: Northern (Arriva Rail North)
Had my first ride on a 195 yesterday - I should have had two rides but I got a 156 in lieu on one service. (I didn't have much luck yesterday with the first train I intended to catch being cancelled, the following service being a 142 instead of a 4 car 150, getting a 2 car 156 instead of a 3 car 195 and then after getting the correct 3 car 195 ending up with a 2 car 150 on a service which was supposed to have 4 cars.)

In short I think the best way to describe the 195s is a nice, modern local train. The seating isn't something you want to sit on for hours and the ride quality at higher speeds isn't great so they are good for a route like Manchester Airport to Liverpool via Warrington but not ideal for the Cumbria services which spend a significant amount of time on the WCML but unless Northern get another type of DMU they don't have anything else more suitable for those services. Also they are much kinder on your ears than any Sprinters or 319s, the latter in particular are very unkind on your ears when passing a train like a 350 or 390 at speed. They are also very quiet, like CAF DMUs which Renfe use and they feel like they are air conditioned, unlike the 158s where the air conditioning feels like occasional puffs of cooler air (and that's when it's 'working')

RE: Northern (Arriva Rail North)
Northern tried to use a single 142 on the 10:41 Manchester to Chester and 13:02 Chester to Manchester yesterday. I say tried because on the Chester bound working the train got so full that passengers for stations between Ashley and Mouldsworth were thrown off at Hale, with the train then running non-stop to Chester. On the return working passengers for stations between Mobberley and Navigation Road were thrown off at Knutsford, with the train then running non-stop to Stockport.
