I wonder if St Helens might get rid of 4600 since buses do get transferred when involved in fatalities

Question: Is it common for the 52 to interwork with the 52A? Today, I spotted 4696 heading into town on the 52A, then about 10 min later, I seen it coming out of town on the 52

Yes. They change numbers when they get to the Netherton terminus. Being a longer route the 52A gets slightly more running time so it balances it out on a one round trip and enables an equal headway.
