The National Executive Committee of the Labour Party have voted against allowing Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham to stand as a candidate in the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election.

The vote, which took place as Burnham required permission from the NEC to stand as a candidate after he declared his wish to contest the by-election was rejected by 8 votes to 1, with the chair of the NEC abstaining from the vote and Lisa Nandy, the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party being the only member on the NEC to vote in support of Burnham.

Had Burnham been allowed to stand as the Labour candidate and subsequently won the by-election, he could've mounted a leadership challenge against the Prime Minister and potentially succeed him as the Prime Minister if he was successful in the leadership challenge.
